Day Tours from London

Day tours from London run from Windsor, about 35 minutes away by train, to 11-hour coach days at Stonehenge and Bath. What separates them is what the price covers: entry tickets in the fare or sold as options, and a minibus of 16 or a coach of 50. The near trips work without any tour, with free museums in Oxford and a free beach in Brighton.

Quick answer The pick, the shortest day and the free option

The pick is Evan Evans' Stonehenge, Windsor Castle and Bath day trip, rated 4.6 from 20,907 reviews, from $106.26 for the coach and guide with entry tickets as options. It covers three places in 11 hours from Victoria Coach Station. If you want the shortest day out, the Windsor Castle half day takes 4 hours and costs $118 with admission. The cheapest listed day is the Cotswolds and Oxford trip at $105.

Day Tours from London Compared

Each listing's "from" price is the lowest adult rate on that listing, and on the big coach days that rate covers the coach and guide while the entry tickets are options you add at booking. The days run from a 4-hour Windsor half day to a 14.5-hour Paris day, and lunch is included on none of them. No tour here collects from a hotel, so every one starts from a meeting point such as Victoria Coach Station, Gloucester Road, Earl's Court, London Bridge or St Pancras. The platform takes the payment, most tours allow free cancellation up to 24 hours before departure, and the exceptions are noted below.

Day Tours from London: Price, Hours and Entry

This table lines up every tour on price, the listing duration, whether entry sits inside the fare and the group size, using the figures printed on each listing. Where entries are sold as options the price is marked "from", because the lowest rate leaves them out.

How Far Each Day Trip from London Really Is

Distance decides the shape of the day. The train times below come from the official tourist board and operator pages for each destination, and the tour times and prices come from the listings.

Distance and Clock Time

Trains reach the near destinations in under an hour, which is why a tour buys you little there. Bath and Salisbury sit under about 90 minutes by rail, yet pairing them with Stonehenge or the villages is what the coach does well. The Cotswolds, the studio and Paris have no simple train-and-walk route from London for a single day.

The table gives the direct train time where the destination has one, the tour's listed duration and the lowest listed tour price with a link to its card.

The Rule of Thumb

Anything under about an hour by train is easy on your own, and that covers Windsor, Oxford, Brighton and Canterbury. The free day trips guide walks through each one, and UK train fares are dynamic, so no fare is quoted here.

Stonehenge and the Cotswolds villages are the opposite case. Trains and buses do not join up in one day without long waits, so a coach saves the connections. Paris is its own category, a 14.5-hour day and a passport at the border.

Stonehenge, Bath and Windsor: The West Days

Four listings cover the west, and they differ in price, hours and what the fare actually contains.

Side by Side

The table compares the two Stonehenge days, the Windsor half day and the Bath, Avebury and Lacock minibus. On the big coach days the lowest price is the coach and guide, with entries chosen as options.

TourPriceHoursWhat the price covers
Stonehenge, Windsor and Bathfrom $106.2611 hoursCoach, guide, entries as options
Stonehenge Inner Circlefrom $254.2111 hoursPrivate inner circle viewing, Windsor by option
Windsor Castle Half-Day$1184 hoursCastle admission and coach from Earl's Court
Bath, Avebury and Lacock$11110.5 hours16-seat minibus and driver-guide, no entries

Windsor on Your Own

Windsor Castle adult tickets cost £32 in advance, and tickets bought on the day cost £2 to £4 more. The castle closes every Tuesday and Wednesday, and it can close without notice because it is a working royal palace. From March to October it opens 10:00 to 17:15, and a typical visit lasts 2 to 3 hours.

Two free sights sit outside the walls. The Long Walk is free to walk from Park Street, and the Guard March can be watched free on the High Street, taking about 10 minutes to pass. This is why the Windsor options on the Stonehenge, Windsor and Bath day are not sold on Tuesdays and Wednesdays, when the castle is shut.

Stonehenge and Bath on Your Own

English Heritage lists last admission at Stonehenge 1.5 hours before closing, and booking online before midnight the day before saves up to 15%, while same-day tickets are full price. No fixed ticket price is printed here because the live price changes by date. Salisbury is the nearest station, about 1.5 hours from Waterloo, with a local bus onward.

In Bath, the Roman Baths charge £2 more on the day than the advance price, and the entrance sits in Abbey Church Yard next to Bath Abbey. The Royal Crescent, the Circus and Pulteney Bridge are free from the street, and the Mayor of Bath Honorary Guides run free walks twice daily. A tour earns its fare here when it joins Bath with Stonehenge or Avebury, which the Bath, Avebury and Lacock day does in a 16-seat minibus.

The Cotswolds, Oxford and Highclere

Three of these four days serve the Cotswolds or Oxford in very different vehicles, and one swaps the villages for Highclere Castle.

Four Days Compared

The table sets the two Cotswolds days against the Warwick and Stratford day and the Highclere day. Prices are the listing rates, and the group figures come from each listing.

TourPriceHoursGroupStops
Cotswolds Small-Group$112.989.5 hoursUp to 16Villages and market towns by minibus
Cotswolds and Oxford$10510.5 hoursUp to 53Burford, Bourton-on-the-Water, Oxford
Warwick, Stratford and Oxfordfrom $106.2610.5 hoursUp to 53Warwick Castle, Stratford-upon-Avon, Oxford
Highclere and Oxford$208.4810 hoursUp to 75Highclere Castle, Bampton, Oxford

What Changes Between Them

Group size is the first split, a minibus of 16 against a coach of up to 53. The Cotswolds and Oxford day includes a guided Oxford walk within 2.5 hours in the city, while the Warwick, Stratford and Oxford day sells Warwick Castle and Shakespeare's Birthplace entries as options and drives through the Cotswolds with no stop. The Highclere day includes the castle entry, an Oxford walking tour and a Bampton stop, and its small-group rival to the villages is the Cotswolds Small-Group day on narrow country lanes.

The Honest Point

Oxford alone needs no tour, since direct trains from Paddington take 52 minutes and the Ashmolean, Pitt Rivers and Natural History museums are all free. The villages are the part that earns the coach fare. By train you can reach Moreton-in-Marsh and pick up the 801 bus, which runs to Stow-on-the-Wold in about 20 minutes and Bourton-on-the-Water in about 30, but that eats hours of a single day.

One diary note, quoted from the Highclere listing: "The tour runs between April and early September, 3-4 days a week, with no tour in June because Highclere Castle is closed."

Harry Potter, the Seven Sisters, Kent and Paris

These four days need no route comparison, because each has a single job, from film sets to a border crossing.

Four Days Compared

The table shows what each listing's base price carries, since the inclusions differ more here than anywhere else on the site.

TourPriceHoursWhat the price covers
Harry Potter Studio Day$1227.5 hoursBranded bus and studio entry
Seven Sisters Day$1449.5 hoursReturn train tickets and a 16-seat minibus
Leeds Castle, Dover and Canterburyfrom $141.2310 hoursLeeds Castle entry, cathedral by option
Paris by Train$34414.5 hoursReturn train, panoramic tour, Seine cruise

The Studio Day

The Warner Bros Studio day gives about 4 hours inside with the sets, costumes and props from all eight films, and the whole trip runs 7.5 to 8 hours. Food is not allowed in from outside, and cancellation needs 3 days' notice for a full refund. The bus is a Warner Bros Studio Tour branded double-decker from Bus Stop 1 on Bulleid Way in Victoria, and the price adds Studio Cafe access.

Some areas use sudden loud effects and strobe lighting, and the Butterbeer may contain nuts, which matters for anyone with an allergy.

The Seven Sisters Day

The Seven Sisters day includes return train tickets to Brighton and a 16-seat minibus for Devil's Dyke, Beachy Head, Birling Gap and Seaford Head. Seven Sisters Country Park is free to enter, so the do-it-yourself version uses the Coaster 12 buses from Brighton. The Seaford Head stop on the tour is a 40-minute walk.

The group meets outside the ticket office inside London Bridge station, and the train takes about 1 hour each way. The listing gives 20 minutes at Devil's Dyke, 30 minutes at Middle Farm and 1 hour at the cliffs. Lunch is not in the price: the Middle Farm tea rooms serve light lunches.

Kent in a Day

The Leeds Castle, Dover and Canterbury day includes Leeds Castle entry, while Canterbury Cathedral entry and its guided tour depend on the option you pick. On your own, the cathedral charges £18.00 for adults from October to March, and high-speed trains reach Canterbury West from St Pancras in about 54 minutes. The coach leaves from the Evan Evans kiosk opposite Gate 1 inside Victoria Coach Station.

The cathedral opens Monday to Saturday 10:00 to 17:00 with last admission at 16:00, and Canterbury East station is a 5-minute walk from the city centre if you come back on your own.

Paris by Train

The Paris day takes the high-speed train from St Pancras, and Eurostar gives 2 hours 17 minutes from St Pancras to Gare du Nord. Arrive 60-75 minutes before departure, since Eurostar's own pages give both figures, and carry a passport with any visa or travel authorisation for France. Cancellation needs 30 days' notice for a full refund, the strictest on this site.

The group meets inside St Pancras International in front of Le Pain Quotidien. In Paris a guided panoramic tour passes the Opera and the Arc de Triomphe, a 1-hour Seine cruise follows, and the guided part ends at the Eiffel Tower with free time. No attraction admissions are included.

Do It Yourself or Book a Tour?

The near trips are easy by train, and rail fares are dynamic so no fare is quoted here. A tour earns its price where trains do not join up in one day.

The Trade, Trip by Trip

The table compares the do-it-yourself option, using train times and entry prices from official operator and attraction pages, with the matching tour and its starting price. On the big coach days the entry tickets are options, so the lowest price covers the coach and guide only.

The Tickets That Matter on Your Own

Off-Peak tickets are valid from 09:30 on weekdays in cities and large towns, and all day at weekends. The Network Railcard costs £35 for a year and gives 1/3 off from 10:00 on weekdays with a £13 minimum fare, and it covers Brighton and Reading. The Two Together and 16-25 Railcards also cost £35.

With the Family & Friends Railcard children aged 5 to 15 get 60% off. Contactless pay as you go works in Zones 1 to 9 and as far as Slough, with a daily cap of £31.20 peak and £22.40 off-peak, but it is not listed for Brighton, Oxford, Cambridge, Bath or Canterbury. Advance tickets are valid only on the train booked.

When a Day Is Not Enough: 2-Day and 3-Day Trips

The coach days to Bath, the Cotswolds or Kent fill 10 to 11 hours, and some places simply repay a longer stay.

Two Days

Bath works well over two days, with the train from Paddington taking under 90 minutes, leaving time the next morning for the Cotswolds on the 801 bus from Moreton-in-Marsh, about 20 minutes to Stow-on-the-Wold and 30 minutes on to Bourton-on-the-Water. York is another good two-day trip, around 2 hours from King's Cross, with York Minster at £20. Details on 2-day trips from London.

Three Days

Edinburgh sits about 4 hours 8 minutes from King's Cross by train, so it wants three days, with Edinburgh Castle at £23.50 booked online. Cornwall is the same story, with Penzance from 5 hours 4 minutes away and the Night Riviera sleeper running six nights a week. These journey times are approximate.

Before You Leave London

A short checklist that saves money and missed buses.

Do

  • Do check the Windsor closing days before booking a Windsor option, because Windsor Castle closes every Tuesday and Wednesday.
  • Do book Stonehenge tickets online before midnight the day before, because booking then saves up to 15% and same-day tickets are full price.
  • Do pick the tour option with the entries you want, because on the big coach days the entry tickets are options and the base price covers the coach and guide only.
  • Do buy Off-Peak tickets or use a Railcard after 09:30 or 10:00 on weekdays, because that is when the discounts start and rail fares are dynamic.
  • Do check the meeting point the night before, because Victoria Coach Station has numbered gates and some tours meet well away from it.

Don't

  • Don't expect hotel pickup, because every tour on this site meets at a London address such as Victoria Coach Station or Gloucester Road.
  • Don't expect lunch in the price, because no tour here includes food.
  • Don't book a Windsor option for a Tuesday or Wednesday, because the castle is closed and those options are not sold.
  • Don't quote a train fare from a blog, because UK rail fares are dynamic and change constantly.

Is a Day Tour from London Worth It

The honest trade between the clock, the price and what arrives at the door.

What we genuinely like

  • A tour solves Stonehenge and the Cotswolds villages, where trains and buses do not join up in one day.
  • Entry logistics are handled, as on the Windsor half day at $118 with admission or the Seven Sisters day at $144 with train tickets included.
  • A guide and a set route cut planning to zero, with free cancellation on most tours 24 hours ahead.

The honest downsides

  • The coach days spend 3 to 4 hours of a 10 to 11 hour day on the road.
  • On the big coach days the entries are options, so the real cost can run past the base price of about $105 to $141.
  • Coaches carry up to 53 people, so you follow the group rather than wander.

Who it's NOT for: Not for travellers who want slow time in one place, since a single village or city centre rewards a full day on your own.

Day Tours from London: Your Questions

What are the best day trips from London?

By review record, the strongest day tours from London are the Seven Sisters day at 4.9 from 1,583 reviews and the Stonehenge, Windsor and Bath coach day at 4.6 from 20,907 reviews. The full ranking is in the day tours from London comparison.

How much does a day tour from London cost?

Listed day tours run from $105 for the Cotswolds and Oxford day to $344 for Paris by high-speed train, with most coach days between about $105 and $145 before optional entries. Prices sit on each card in the tour catalog.

Can you visit Stonehenge without a tour?

Yes, by train to Salisbury in about 1.5 hours from Waterloo, then the Salisbury shuttle at £15 return, which does not include admission. It makes a long day, which is why many take the Stonehenge, Windsor and Bath day trip.

Is the Cotswolds better on a tour?

Usually yes for one day, because the villages are spread across country lanes the trains do not join up, and a small-group Cotswolds tour covers several in 9.5 hours. On your own you reach one or two villages by bus from Moreton-in-Marsh.

Can you do Paris as a day trip from London?

Yes, but it is the longest day here at 14.5 hours, with about 2 hours 15 minutes on the train each way, a passport required and free cancellation only 30 days ahead on the Paris day trip by train.

Can children join these day tours?

Most coach tours price children 3 to 16 separately with infants on a lap, the Cotswolds small-group day starts at age 7, the Bath, Avebury and Lacock minibus does not carry under-5s, and the Paris day trip needs a passport for every traveller including children.

The most reviewed day tour from London: Stonehenge, Windsor Castle and Bath in one 11-hour coach day, 4.6 from 20,907 reviews.

Free cancellation up to 24 hours before departure, entries chosen as options at checkout.
