How to Plan a Day Trip from London
Knowing how to plan a day trip from London comes down to four things: the right terminal, the right ticket, the right timing and a realistic list. This guide covers all of them. It maps which London station serves which region, explains Off-Peak, Anytime and Advance tickets, railcards and contactless caps, and lists the closing days and timed tickets that catch people out. It also shows where the bookable day tours from London leave from, since none of them collect from hotels. Use it as the preparation layer, then follow the links to the destination pages for the routes themselves. The bookable tours are compared on day tours from London.

Quick answer The short version
To plan a day trip from London, pick the terminal that serves your region, travel on an Off-Peak ticket which starts at 09:30 on weekdays in cities and large towns, and check closing days before you fix a date. A Railcard costs £35 for a year and cuts most fares by a third. If you would rather not plan, the bookable day tours from London handle the tickets and timing for you.
Key takeaways
- Match the destination to the terminal: Windsor via Waterloo or Paddington, Cambridge from King's Cross, Brighton from Victoria, Canterbury from St Pancras. The station table has all nine.
- Off-Peak, Anytime and Advance tickets work differently. The tickets section explains the rules, child fares and every Railcard.
- Windsor Castle closes on Tuesdays and Wednesdays, the Fitzwilliam closes on Mondays, and Stonehenge needs booking before midnight the day before for up to 15% off. See timing.
- No tour in the catalog collects from a hotel. Check the meeting points before you set an alarm, and compare London day tours in the full table.
Which London Terminal for Which Day Trip
National Rail counts 18 London terminal stations and the nine below cover nearly every do-it-yourself day trip. A fare to London Terminals is valid at any terminal on your reasonable route, so a Woking ticket works at Waterloo and Victoria but not at Euston or Paddington.
The Terminal Map
Start here, because the wrong terminal costs real time. Paddington sends Great Western trains west, Waterloo sends South Western Railway trains to Surrey, Hampshire and Dorset, and Victoria plus London Bridge cover the south coast. King's Cross and Liverpool Street own the north and east, St Pancras runs Kent high-speed and Eurostar, Euston covers the north-west and Marylebone the Chiltern line. Victoria Coach Station is the coach hub for many of the guided tours.
The examples come from Network Rail, National Rail and the operators' own pages.
| Terminal | Regions | Examples |
|---|---|---|
| Paddington | West and South West of England (GWR, Heathrow Express, Elizabeth line) | Bath (under 90 minutes), Oxford (from 52 minutes), Windsor via Slough (about 35 minutes in total) |
| Waterloo | Surrey, Hampshire, Berkshire, Dorset (South Western Railway) | Windsor and Eton Riverside (about 55 minutes), Salisbury (about 1.5 hours), Winchester |
| Victoria | South coast and Gatwick | Brighton (52 minutes), Eastbourne, Dover Priory, Whitstable, Gatwick Airport (Gatwick Express, 30 minutes) |
| London Bridge | South coast | Brighton (58 minutes) |
| King's Cross | North and Cambridgeshire (Great Northern, LNER) | Cambridge (about 1 hour), York (around 2 hours), Edinburgh (around 4 hours 8 minutes) |
| St Pancras International | Kent high-speed and Europe (Southeastern Javelin, Eurostar) | Canterbury West (about 54 minutes), Dover, Margate, Paris (2 hours 17 minutes) |
| Euston | North West (Avanti West Coast, London Northwestern) | Liverpool Lime Street (just over 2 hours), Watford Junction for the Warner Bros. Studio Tour (20 minutes) |
| Marylebone | Chiltern line (Chiltern Railways) | Oxford (from 1 hour 12 minutes), Banbury, Stratford-upon-Avon, Birmingham Moor Street |
| Liverpool Street | East: Essex, Hertfordshire, Cambridgeshire, Norfolk, Suffolk | Cambridge (about 1 hour 30 minutes on stopping trains), Stansted Express every 15 minutes |
| Victoria Coach Station | Long-distance and tour coaches | 164 Buckingham Palace Road, SW1W 9TP, 20 gates, ticket office 07:00 to 21:00 |
Two Station Choices Worth Knowing
Some destinations have two London routes and the difference matters. Windsor has Windsor and Eton Central from Paddington via Slough, about 35 minutes with a 6-minute branch line change, and Windsor and Eton Riverside from Waterloo, about 55 minutes direct. Both stations sit within a few minutes' walk of the castle. Cambridge has the Great Northern fast train from King's Cross at about one hour and the slower Greater Anglia service from Liverpool Street at about 1 hour 30 minutes. Oxford also has two: Paddington from 52 minutes and Marylebone from 1 hour 12 minutes.

Tickets and Railcards
UK train fares are dynamic, so this page never quotes one. What it does quote are the rules, the child discounts, the fixed Railcard prices and the fixed contactless caps, because those decide which ticket to buy.
Off-Peak, Anytime and Advance
Off-Peak tickets are valid from 09:30 on weekdays in cities and large towns and from 09:00 elsewhere, and all day at weekends and bank holidays. An Off-Peak return stays valid for one month from the date shown, which gives a day trip room to breathe. Travel outside the permitted times and you pay the difference to the Anytime fare plus possible penalty charges, so do not board an earlier train on an Off-Peak ticket.
Anytime tickets have no time restrictions and work on any train on the route shown. They cost the most and suit an early start when Off-Peak does not apply yet. Advance tickets are valid only on the date and train booked, can usually be bought up to 12 weeks ahead, and are not refundable in normal circumstances. Changing one costs £10 plus any fare difference. An Advance ticket does not allow breaking the journey, while Off-Peak and Anytime generally do.
Children aged 5 to 15 pay 50% of the adult Off-Peak fare.
Railcards Compared
A Railcard gives 1/3 off most fares and ticket types, and a minimum fare may apply at certain times. Most cost £35 for one year or £80 for three years, and the Disabled Persons Railcard costs £20 or £54. The discounts below come from National Rail and the Railcard site.
| Railcard | Price | Discount | Limits |
|---|---|---|---|
| 16-25 Railcard | £35 / 1 year, £80 / 3 years | 1/3 off most fares | Ages 16 to 25, or mature full-time students. £12 minimum fare on weekdays 04:30 to 10:00, not applied to Advance tickets, public holidays or July and August |
| 26-30 Railcard | £35 / 1 year only | 1/3 off most fares | Ages 26 to 30. Minimum fares apply at certain times |
| 16-17 Saver | £35 / 1 year only | 1/3 off most fares | Ages 16 and 17 only |
| Two Together Railcard | £35 / 1 year only | 1/3 off most fares | Two named adults 16+, buy and travel together. Not valid 04:30 to 09:29 Monday to Friday except public holidays |
| Family & Friends Railcard | £35 / 1 year, £80 / 3 years | 1/3 off adults, 60% off children 5 to 15 | Up to 4 adults and 4 children. At least 1 named adult and 1 child must travel. Not valid on weekday morning peak services wholly within the London and South East area |
| Network Railcard | £35 / 1 year only | 1/3 off for you and up to 3 adults, 60% off up to 4 children | London and the South East, including Brighton and Reading. Discount starts 10:00 Monday to Friday, all day weekends and public holidays. £13 minimum fare Monday to Friday |
| Disabled Persons Railcard | £20 / 1 year, £54 / 3 years | 1/3 off most fares | Eligibility conditions apply |
Contactless and Oyster
Oyster or contactless pay as you go works on National Rail within London Zones 1 to 9, with daily and weekly caps in those zones. Beyond Zone 9 only a short list of stations accepts contactless pay as you go, and TfL prints the caps. Slough has a daily cap from Zones 1-6 of £31.20 peak and £22.40 off-peak, Maidenhead is £39.50 peak and £25.60 off-peak, Reading is £71.30 peak and £37.20 off-peak, and Gatwick Airport excluding Gatwick Express is £40.80 peak and £24.10 off-peak. Watford Junction, Epsom, Redhill, Hertford East and Shenfield are also on the list.
Windsor, Brighton, Oxford, Cambridge, Bath and Canterbury are not on the list, so buy a paper or digital train ticket for those.

Timing: Closing Days, Hours and Timed Tickets
The most common planning failure is arriving on the one day a site is shut or its timed tickets are gone. The table gathers the closing days and booking rules the official pages state.
Closing Days and Timed Entry
Every row comes from the attraction's own site or its official tourist board. Sunday is the weak day for cathedrals: Canterbury's church opens at 12:30 on Sundays, Winchester opens at 12:30, and St George's Chapel at Windsor is closed to general visitors on Sundays although worshippers are welcome at services, which run from 8.30am Holy Communion to 5.15pm Evensong. Windsor Castle itself closes every Tuesday and Wednesday and can close without notice because it is a working royal palace.
The Christ Church Great Hall closes Monday to Friday 12:00 to 14:00, so a Hogwarts-hall seeker should time that visit after 14:00 on a weekday.
| Site | Closed | Timed ticket or rule |
|---|---|---|
| Windsor Castle | Every Tuesday and Wednesday, St George's Chapel closed to visitors on Sundays | £32 adult booked in advance, £2 to £4 more on the day, ages 5-17 £16, under 5 free. Last admission 75 minutes before closing |
| Stonehenge | 25 December | Book online before midnight the day before to save up to 15%, same-day tickets are full price. Tickets valid all day once booked |
| King's College Chapel, Cambridge | Can close at short notice for services | Ticket numbers are limited and on-the-day tickets are not guaranteed. £15.75 to £17 weekdays, £16.75 to £18 weekends, or free at evensong |
| Warner Bros. Studio Tour London | Occasional maintenance closures, check the calendar | All tickets pre-booked, no door sales. Every ticket is a timed slot, arrive 20 minutes early |
| Christ Church, Oxford | Great Hall closed Mon-Fri 12:00-14:00, Saturdays 10:30-14:00 in Michaelmas Term | Tickets released each Friday at about 10am for the following week. Booking in advance saves £2 per ticket |
| Fitzwilliam Museum, Cambridge | Mondays | Free, open Tuesday to Saturday 10:00-17:00, Sundays and bank holidays 12:00-17:00 |
| Canterbury Cathedral | Sunday church opens 12:30, grounds and shop only from 11:30 | £18.00 October to March, £19.50 April to September, £21.00 July and August weekends. Last admission 16:00 |
| Winchester Cathedral | Several closure dates through November | £13.90 online, £14.90 at the door. Last entry 30 minutes before closing, Sunday 12:30 to 15:00 |
| Leeds Castle | Estate closure days apply | Explorer ticket £34.50 online, £38.50 onsite, last entry 3pm, tickets valid 12 months |
| Roman Baths, Bath | 25 and 26 December | Book online in advance, allow up to 15 minutes for entry from the booked slot. On-the-day tickets cost £2 more |
How to Build the Day Around the Clock
Three timing rules do most of the work. First, take the first Off-Peak train you can, which means 09:30 or later on weekdays in cities and large towns and 09:00 elsewhere. Paddington to Oxford from 52 minutes and King's Cross to Cambridge at about one hour both leave a full afternoon. Second, book timed tickets the day before at the latest, because Stonehenge's discount cuts off at midnight and the Warner Bros. Studio Tour holds nothing back for door sales. Third, check the last train before you set out and keep the return in hand. Off-Peak returns are valid for a month, so an earlier or later return train is usually fine on the same route.
National Rail's Journey Planner shows engineering changes and its industrial action page lists strikes. Engineering works do happen, for example bus replacements have been scheduled on the East Coast route, so a Sunday trip deserves a check the night before.

Where the Tours Leave From
No tour in this catalog collects from a hotel. Every one meets at a fixed point, mostly around Victoria, and the listing states it. Most listings give an arrive-by time, so be there then and build in margin for traffic around Victoria Coach Station.
Meeting Points for Each Tour
Victoria Coach Station sits at 164 Buckingham Palace Road, SW1W 9TP, with 20 gates and a ticket office open 07:00 to 21:00. Victoria Tube station is about a 300 metre walk away. Note that the Rabbie's Bath tour does not leave from Victoria Coach Station at all: it uses Stand 3 at Green Line Coach Station on Bulleid Way, behind Victoria station.
Getting the two coach stations mixed up is the classic start-of-day mistake. Three more tours are not in the table. The Warwick Castle, Stratford and Oxford day meets at the Evan Evans kiosk opposite Gate 1 inside Victoria Coach Station, the Stonehenge inner circle day at Evan Evans Tours, 258 Vauxhall Bridge Road, and the Downton Abbey day at the Premium Tours desk at Gate 19-20 inside Victoria Coach Station.
| Tour | Meeting point | Arrive by |
|---|---|---|
| Stonehenge, Windsor Castle and Bath Day Trip from London | Evan Evans check-in inside Victoria Coach Station, Gate 1-5, 164 Buckingham Palace Road | 7:30 AM check-in |
| Harry Potter Warner Bros. Studio Tour from London with Branded Bus | Bus Stop 1, Bulleid Way, Victoria, SW1W 9SR, closest station Victoria. You choose the boarding time at booking | Chosen at booking |
| Cotswolds Small-Group Day Tour from London | Urban Baristas coffee shop, near South Kensington station | 8:15 AM check-in |
| Cotswolds and Oxford Guided Day Trip from London | Opposite Gloucester Road Underground station, outside Stanhope Arms bar, 97 Gloucester Rd | 7:15 AM |
| Leeds Castle, Dover and Canterbury Day Trip from London | Evan Evans kiosk opposite Gate 1, inside Victoria Coach Station | 8:30 AM |
| Seven Sisters and South Downs Day Trip from London with Train Tickets | Outside the ticket office inside London Bridge station, opposite Hotel Chocolat | Not stated |
| Windsor Castle Half-Day Trip from London with Castle Tickets | Opposite Earl's Court Underground station, Bus Stop C, Warwick Road exit, SW5 9TB | 9:00 AM departure |
| Paris Day Trip from London by High-Speed Train with Seine Cruise | St Pancras International, in front of Le Pain Quotidien coffee shop. Check-in 6:00 AM Monday to Friday, 5:30 AM Saturday | 6:00 AM weekdays, 5:30 AM Saturdays |
| Bath, Avebury and Lacock Small-Group Day Trip from London | Stand 3, Green Line Coach Station, Bulleid Way, behind Victoria station | Not stated |
What the Price Does and Does Not Cover
Read the inclusion line before you compare prices, because several listings show the lowest option. The Stonehenge, Windsor and Bath coach day starts at $106.26, the Leeds Castle, Dover and Canterbury day at $141.23 and the Stonehenge inner circle day at $254.21 (its listed 2026 dates ended on 21 September and the official Stone Circle Experience has no sessions in October or November), but on each of those the castle, cathedral or Roman Baths entries are add-ons that raise the total. Lunch is never included on any tour here, food and drinks are always extra. The Warner Bros. Studio Tour by branded bus at $122 does include studio entry with about 4 hours inside, and the Paris day by Eurostar at $344 includes the return train and a 1-hour Seine cruise but no attraction admissions.
For the full side-by-side comparison of every tour, the day tours from London homepage holds the comparison table.
What to Bring and What to Leave
A day trip punishes overpacking and underchecking. These are the items the official pages and tour listings actually name.
Documents and Tickets
For Paris, carry a passport: Eurostar checks it twice at St Pancras, first for UK exit checks and then for the French authorities, and passport and luggage checks happen before boarding. Arrive 60 to 75 minutes before departure, since Eurostar's own pages give both figures, and gates close 30 minutes before for Standard and Plus. Any EES checks are completed at the border before you leave the UK, registration costs nothing, and a digital EES record is valid for 3 years.
ETIAS is not yet in operation, so no application exists to make. A Standard ticket allows 2 large bags up to 85cm plus 1 small hand item, and an extra bag costs from £35.
Footwear, Weather and Food
The Seven Sisters walk needs proper shoes. Walking from Seaford station to the country park takes about one hour, the Seaford Head stop on the small-group Seven Sisters day is a 40-minute walk, and the park asks visitors to stay at least 5 metres from the cliff edge because chalk falls happen unpredictably. Stonehenge is outdoors with no cloakroom or left luggage, so bring only essentials and dress for the weather, though the visitor bus to the stones takes around 5-10 minutes and is free with admission. On the studio day, food from outside is not allowed, so budget for the Studio Cafe, and note photos on phones are allowed in most areas except the pre-show cinema and green screen.
If you travel by coach instead, National Express allows 1 large suitcase up to 75cm x 50cm x 32cm and 20kg in the hold free plus 1 small soft hand bag, and hard-shelled cases and wheelie bags must go in the hold.
Planning Do's and Don'ts
Five habits that make a London day trip run, and four that sink it.
Do
- Do pick the terminal first, because Bath from Paddington takes under 90 minutes and each terminal serves different regions.
- Do buy a £35 Railcard if two or more people travel together often, since the card takes 1/3 off most fares.
- Do book timed tickets before midnight the day before where it matters, because Stonehenge's up-to-15% saving ends then and the Studio Tour sells no door tickets.
- Do check Sunday hours before choosing a cathedral day, since Canterbury's church opens at 12:30 and Winchester at 12:30 on Sundays.
- Do check the National Rail Journey Planner for engineering works and the industrial action page for strikes the evening before you travel.
Don't
- Don't ride an earlier train on an Off-Peak ticket, because travelling outside permitted times means paying the difference to the Anytime fare plus possible penalties.
- Don't assume contactless works everywhere, because the beyond-Zone-9 list covers Slough, Gatwick and Watford Junction but not Brighton, Oxford, Cambridge, Bath or Canterbury.
- Don't go to a tour meeting point at Victoria Coach Station without checking, because the Rabbie's Bath tour leaves from Green Line Coach Station behind Victoria and the Cotswolds minibus meets near South Kensington.
- Don't count on hotel pickup, because no tour in this catalog collects you, and the coach tours meet inside or beside Victoria Coach Station.
Planning Questions
What is the best day trip to take from London?
There is no single best one, only the best match. Windsor Castle is the easiest full-day structure, with a 2 to 3 hour visit, trains in about 35 to 55 minutes and the free Long Walk and riverside loop when the castle closes on Tuesdays and Wednesdays. For a guided option, the Stonehenge, Windsor Castle and Bath day trip covers three stops in 11 hours from $106.26. The full range of day trips from London is compared on the homepage.
What are some good day trips I can take from London by train?
Oxford from Paddington in as little as 52 minutes, Cambridge from King's Cross in about one hour, Brighton from Victoria in 52 minutes, Canterbury from St Pancras in about 54 minutes and Bath from Paddington in under 90 minutes are the core five. Further out, Salisbury at about 1.5 hours from Waterloo, puts you 12 miles from Stonehenge. The destination-by-destination routes live in the guide to day trips from London by train.
How do I plan a day trip from London without a car?
Use the terminal map and Off-Peak trains. Travel from 09:30 on weekdays in cities and large towns or 09:00 elsewhere, buy a return valid for one month, and check whether contactless covers your station, since it reaches Slough and Gatwick but not Brighton, Oxford or Bath. Where buses fill the gap, the Stonehenge Shuttle from Salisbury costs £15 return and takes about 30 minutes each way, not including admission.
What is a good one-day plan for London's surroundings?
Pick one region and two or three stops. A Windsor day works as the castle from 10:00, the 10:45 Guard March along Windsor High Street and the one-hour two bridges loop on the Thames, all reachable from Waterloo in about 55 minutes. A Kent day pairs Canterbury Cathedral, open Monday to Saturday 10:00 to 17:00, with the free White Cliffs walk. Keep the last train time in view all day.
Do I need to book train tickets in advance for a day trip from London?
Not in the Advance-ticket sense. Advance tickets are cheapest but lock you to one date and train, cost £10 plus fare difference to change and are not refundable in normal circumstances. For a flexible day trip an Off-Peak return, valid for a month and usable on any permitted train, is usually the safer buy, and a Railcard cuts it by a third.
What time should I arrive for a guided day tour from London?
The listings state meeting points and most give an arrive-by time, such as 7:30 AM for the Stonehenge, Windsor and Bath coach and 8:30 AM for the Leeds Castle day, so be there at the stated time. Coach tours meet inside Victoria Coach Station at gates such as Gate 1-5 or Gate 19-20, and the Paris train day meets at St Pancras, where Eurostar recommends arriving 60 to 75 minutes before departure. Carry your booking confirmation, since that is what staff check at the gate.
